The Arts

Art and Design

The children experiment with a variety of materials and tools to develop their ideas in Art. They learn about colour and colour mixing and make observational representations in 2D and 3D. They learn to represent ideas and feelings. We encourage the children to talk about their own and others' work including the work of local artists. Whenever the opportunity arises artists come into school to share their expertise and work with the children.

Design & Technology

The children have opportunities to develop their ideas and build a range of models. They design and make images and junk models; they evaluate and discuss how they can improve their work. The children work with a range of materials and develop an understanding of how to join different materials. The children also have opportunities to take part in a variety of cooking activities.

Music

Children learn about music through units of work which enable children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based approach to learning. Learning about the same musical concept through different musical activities enables a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills. Children work progressively through each strand of musical learning from Reception to Year 2 to embed a deeper learning, knowledge, understanding and skills.

Musical teaching and learning are not neat or linear. Over time, children both develop new musical skills and concepts, and re-visit established musical skills and concepts. Repeating a musical skill does not necessarily mean their progress is slowing down or their development is moving backwards.
