Reading

At Ellenborough, our children follow the Read, Write Inc reading scheme. The children work from early books with no pictures, moving onto books which match their phonic knowledge through a series of phases which feeds into the schemes used in local Junior Schools.

Our children start with books that have no words, but a series of pictures which encourages the children to think about connecting events to make a story. The children then move onto sound blending books which contain simple words made up of the sounds that that they are secure in.

As they progress through the stages, they are exposed to sounds that are represented by more than one grapheme as well as common exception words and they apply these by reading books which have sentences.  This continues with the quantity of text increasing as well the complexity of words and children are exposed to a wider range of vocabulary.  Children develop their comprehension skills, and learn how to use expression and intonation.

Children who complete the Read, Write Inc programme move onto Accelerated Reader.  This enables children to make choices around the texts that they read and deepen their comprehension skills based on their assigned reading level.
